Španělsko - Antequera The first settlers in this area left very important archaeological testimony. One of them are the intriguing dolmens of Viera, Menga and Romeral - collosal burial structures built in the Bronze Age. It is believed that from this time on this area was always populated - mainly because of its geographic location. In the centre of Andalusia there is natural crossroads between upper and lower Andalusia.

That is why it was possible for many settlers (e.g. Iberians, Tartessians, Phoenicians and Carthaginians) to pass through and settle down here. Some indications have been found later at Cerro León that the battle between the Roman legions and Hasdrubal’s Carthaginians took place here. The city was named by the Romans. It comes from the ancient Antikaria - a name that would be kept by the Arabs who conquered it in the 8th century. The Arabs greatly extended and strengthened the town - building the Alcazaba fort and the Medina’s walls. The town became a strategic point for the Christian troops after the capture of Seville and Jaén and they finally entered Antequera in 1410.
